Skin changes with age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did.

This is no surprise to women in their prime! Wrinkles, age spots, veins, dryness, years of suntanning– it’s all part of that aging process.

But there are things you can do to protect your skin and to make it feel and look better. While skincare products do help, there comes a time when we look in the mirror and want more of a boost to our facial skin and complexion.

Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatment: A New Non-Laser Treatment for Skin Rejuvenation

A Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatment is a resurfacing-type treatment.  It uses thermal heat and microcurrent to induce collagen, break up bad, unhealthy tissue, allow for better penetration of products, and remove unwanted pigment in the skin. In addition, it helps with overall textural blending by stimulating collagen and elastin production and helps tighten the skin.

I recommend this treatment for clients (women in their prime!) with concerns about irregular skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation with texture called PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), dull skin, acne scars, and enlarged pores. With this treatment, clients can see significant improvement in their skin quality.

How Do Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatments Work?

The device, although small in size, but it is very powerful in its delivery. It uses non-laser-based thermal energy, unlike laser devices or procedures such as dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. It delivers controlled heat at a high temperature to the top layer of the skin without damaging its surface. Since it’s not laser-based, protective eyewear is unnecessary, resulting in treatments closer to the eyes.

This treatment helps stimulate the skin regeneration and production of new collagen and elastin, allows for better penetration of products, targets pigment, and improves texture and tone. This leads to a more youthful and radiant appearance.

Older technology (RF Skin Tightening machines) utilized more aggressive lasers (hot) to resurface the skin. This new technology results in skin that heals much faster and is much easier to tolerate. Clients have less of that high sensation of heat that lingers on their skin. It is also a much safer approach to resurfacing.

Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatments are a safe and effective treatment for skin rejuvenation. They are a good option for people who are looking for a non-surgical way to improve the appearance of their skin.

What are the Advantages of Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatments?

One of the advantages occurring with the fractional device is the microchannels it creates, creating tiny, precise wounds on the top layer of your skin. These initiate a healing response. It also produces a microcurrent to stimulate collagen and elastin production. They also provide a channel for us to add serums (for each client’s needs) to penetrate your skin for 90% absorption.

In addition, the thermal device provides heat energy which causes collagen and elastic contraction. The result is that you can expect to notice the tightening effect as a secondary benefit.

Another benefit of a Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatment is that you can see the changes in your skin instantaneously after each treatment, once the skin is fully healed, since it is treating the top layer of the skin.

This is unlike microneedling.  There are no needles.  There’s no need to numb the skin.

What are the Disadvantages of Fractional Thermal  Microcurrent Treatments?

With the advantages of any procedure, it is important to also weigh the potential disadvantages. These include:

  • Redness from the thermal heat: The procedure can cause redness due to the heat of the thermal tip.

  • Redness and a slight grid look: The fractional tip (microcurrent) can leave redness and a slight grid look.  It disappears within hours.

  • Redness and swelling: The skin could become red and swollen for 24 – 48 hours after the treatment.

  • Peeling: The skin could slightly peel the following day.

  • Sun sensitivity: The skin will be more sensitive to the sun. Best to wait 48 hours after treatment, before going out into the sun for any length of time. ALWAYS wear sunscreen.

  • Infection: There is a very small risk of infection after the treatment.

  • Scarring: Scarring is very rare but is listed as a possible side effect of fractional thermal microcurrent treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

Most clients will see some difference after the first treatment.  You will see and feel a tightness in the skin, as well as a significant improvement in your skin quality/texture.

This treatment can be used successfully on all skin colors and types.

Most clients book 3 appointments to begin their treatments.  It may only take 3 treatments.  This depends on the client’s age, their skin elasticity, skin condition and other factors that we can discuss at your initial appointment.

To get the full benefit of this treatment, it may take 6+ treatments. Every person’s skin is different and reacts differently to facial treatments.   Once you achieve your skin goal, then you will only need to come in for periodic maintenance.

What are the steps in the Fractional Thermal Microcurrent Treatment?

The steps I use at The Gua Sha Facial Co. for this treatment:

  1. Cleanse the skin thoroughly.   (I do not need to numb the skin.)

  2. Apply the serum that is selected exclusively for the client’s individual skin needs/concerns.

  3. I will first use the Fractional tip. (using the power that is set best for the client’s skin) This tip will be used in a stamping motion.  This tip also has Microcurrent, so it will be set to the client’s skin level of power.

  4. I will stamp the face (forehead, eyelids, under eye, cheek area, nose, chin, jawline) and neck.

  5. This will last approximately 15 minutes.

  6. Next, I apply a cream mixture blended for the client’s individual skin needs/concerns.

  7. I will use the Thermal tip. (using the power that is set best for the client’s skin) This tip procedure will be performed using a smooth movement over the entire face and neck. (concentrating more on areas of concern to the client)

  8. This will last approximately 15 minutes.

  9. I will apply a cooling/repair cream, as well as give the client a cooling/repair cream to take home to use.
